Download and install iOS 9 beta on iPhone, iPad: Apple unveiled the brand new iOS 9 at the WWDC 2015 Keynote address recently, revealing the variety of new features and improvements that will come with it. This method requires and UDID.
A beta version of iOS 9 was made available for developers a while back, and those who have a developer account can install the new operating system on their iPhone or iPad. Installing iOS 9 beta on your device is a simple and easy process.
1 – Installing iOS 9 beta (First Step)
First you will need to log in to the Member Center on Apple’s Developer website. You will then have to click on the “Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles”. After you have done that you will need to click on “Devices” in the left navigational panel under “iOS Apps”. Click on the “+” button to add your iOS device.
Next you will need to enter the UDID (“universally unique identifier”) of the iOS device (it is a 40 hex character string that you can find either Xcode or iTunes).
1.1 – Getting UDID from Xcode
If you are going to use Xcode, connect your device to your computer and open the application. Navigate to the window drop down menu and choose “Organizer”. From there you will see your device’s UDID. Simply double click on it to highlight it and then press Command+C to copy the UDID to your Clipboard.
1.2 – Getting UDID from iTunes
If you are going to use iTunes, simply connect your iOS device to the computer and open the program. Once you are in iTunes, select your iOS device in the “Devices” section and go to the Summary tab. Click on the “Serial Number” label where you will see the Identifier field as well as the 40 hex character UDID. Right click on the UDID and click on “Copy Identifier” (see the next image) to copy it to your Clipboard.
2 – Downloading iOS 9 software (Second Step)
You will then have to download the iOS software by navigating to the Member Center, click on SDKs, and then iOS 9. Click on “Download”, which is located in the top right corner. Select your device from the drop down list. After the download is completed, double click on the zip file to extract the .ipsw file.
3 – Installing iOS 9 is the next and final step (Third Step)
You will first have to open iTunes and connect your iOS device to the computer. Once you are in iTunes, select your device from the top right corner and click the “Summary” tab. Hold down on the “Open” key and click “Update iPhone” (or whatever device you are using). Select the .ipsw file from the extracted folder to install iOS 9 beta and click the “Open” button.
You may find that iTunes will prompt you that it will begin updating your device with iOS 9. Simply click “Ok” to continue. You will see a “Slide to upgrade” screen appear after the device reboots.
Swipe the slider to go to the next step. Your device will reboot one more time, and you will see a “Hello” welcome screen. Swipe on the “Slide to Setup” slider and hit “Continue” and follow the instructions on the screen of your device to complete the process.
Important Note: If you want to have iOS 9 on your mobile device but don’t have a developer account, you can enroll in the program for $99 per year.
