Mac Mini RAM and Disk upgrade FAQ (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014-current)

If you’ll buy a Mac Mini you should read this first. RAM and Disk upgrade may be not possible in all the Mac Mini models.

Can I install more RAM on my Mac Mini?

The answer is yes and no. Here you have summary of the Mac Mini 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014-current (MacSales).


Mac Mini model Mac Mini Late 2014 (“MGEM2xx/A“, “MGEN2xx/A” or “MGEQ2xx/A” – where t e 2 char xx vary by country) current memory is not user-upgradable. You can identify your Mac Mini model.

For older Mac Mini models: Mac mini (Late 2012), Mac mini (Mid 2011) and previous, the memory slot is accessible and RAM can be easily upgradable.

How to Upgrade Same on Mac Mini 2012 and previous

For Mac Mini 2012 and previous: put Mac mini upside down, rotate the bottom cover counterclockwise to the unlocked position (see the two points for open and locked positions). And RAM slot is right there. Check how it looks like on Mac Mini 2012:

  1. Remove old memory: retain clips and out the memory ram of the solt.
  2. Install new memory: start pressing the notched edge of the memory module into the bottom slot keeping the opposite edge raided then press it down until the clips lock.

Besides upgrading RAM on “compatible Ram upgrade” Mac Mini models being easy.  To keep your warranty you can consider to purchase an upgrade directly from an Apple Store. In that case you know service is well done and you keep covered.

Mac Mini: Upgrading SSD or Hard Drive

Here’s why you may upgrade your Mac Mini hard drive (check this quickbench provided by ars) specially for Mac Mini with HDD owners:


Hard drive replacement is possible for all the presented models but considering different scenarios:

  • 2014 – current Mac Mini: PCIe (PCI Express) SSD upgrade is tricky but possible (we may post a video soon doing that).
  • Mac Miini 2012 and older: internal drive can be upgraded up top 2.0TB (hdd internal drive) and 1.0 GB (ssd internal drive).

If you need more RAM (specially if you’ll use Mac Mini as server) consider before buying a Mac Mini 2014 model.
